Tree Bark

Wendy Gan

I had never noticed how varied tree bark could be. From curious folds in the trunk to striking, etching-like patterns, there is a world of textures to be discovered here.

Stare at this tree long enough and you might imagine that it is a petrified fish instead.

With its fissures and ripples, this trunk is an intricate work of art. An ant exploring its surface might feel itself lost in an ancient, arid landscape of ridges and valleys.

We are often blind to the trees around us, paying them attention only when colourful flowers draw our eyes. Think of the cherry tree. We flock to them when they are in bloom, but ignore them once in leaf. If we observe trees more carefully, they repay us with subtle pleasures.
